Māori Language Week 2022

Te Wiki O Te Reo Māori 2022.

This year is extra special as 14th September marked the 50th anniversary of the Māori Language Petition. An event that led to many of the kaupapa (ideas) we have today, including Te Wiki O Te Reo Māori.

At Hato Pāora Kura (St Paul’s College) we celebrated Te Wiki O Te Reo Māori with the young men of our school leading our morning assemblies with their Pepeha, Phrases of the Day in Māori, and a korero shared as to the significance of keeping their language alive.

We were fortunate to have Manuel Beazley, Māori Vicar from The Catholic Diocese visit our school and share his knowledge of the importance of Te Reo Māori in Aotearoa, and Pa Peter Tipene celebrating Mass in Māori with our Kura.

Our Year 7-10 students were able to partake in the Kio Rahi Game House Competition held during lunch time, this was led by Mr Jarvis and Mrs Tagaloa. Mr Tanielu along with some of our students visited Marist Primary School, Herne Bay where they gave a mihi, shared their pepeha, and led Māori waiata and games with the students.

As we continue to celebrate the Māori Language throughout the month of Mahuru (September) we encourage our families of all cultures to speak, sing and celebrate their language as well so that we may be united in our aspirations for our language's survival.

Ngā mihi nui koutou
Kia Kaha Te Reo Māori
Mrs FIU.
