Tongan Language Week 2023

Mālō e lelei,

This week we have celebrated Tongan Language Week with our boys leading speeches in assemblies and being taught several Tongan phrases each day. Today we had a lovely Tongan liturgy in our school chapel. Throughout the week there were activities on every lunchtime including; a Tongan music and art session, Tongan Scavenger Hunt/race around the school, Kahoot! Quiz all about Tonga and the boys made Kahoa Lole. Mālō 'aupito to our parents who came in on Friday afternoon to help the students make their Kahoa Lole.

We had two groups of students who visited primary schools within our Kāhui Ako to share their Tongan Culture. John Tangi, Montell Laumea, Orlando Malakai, Carlos Malakai, Brian Tausilia, Ceazah-Blue Tukuafu-Taufa and Soakai Finau went to Marist Herne Bay and St Joseph's Grey Lynn to deliver interactive sessions; singing beautiful Tongan hymns, teaching phrases and then playing games and teaching Church Songs and the Sipi Tau. It was wonderful to see our Junior School students leading such engaging sessions, showing immense pride in their culture. A group of Year 13 Students visited St Francis Primary School and performed some Tongan dances for their students.

Mālō 'aupito to Ms Manu for creating a beautiful Tongan display in our school reception and helping to organise and run activities with our boys. Ms Manu also led us in Tongan prayer this morning in our staff briefing and paid tribute to Our Mother Mary who we celebrate today. She organised a fun quiz for staff and had beautiful prizes donated from Tupu'anga - a Tongan Cafe in Mt Albert.
