Tongan Language Week

The 2025 theme for Tongan Language Week was 'Ko 'etau lea, ko e fe’unu mahu’inga ia ki he mo’ui ‘a e Tonga - Our language is a vital strand of our Tongan culture.'

The week was a celebration of Tongan culture, with students participating in a variety of activities. From addressing the school at morning assembly to celebrating during chapel and taking part in language week events in class and during breaks, students were encouraged to embrace their Tongan heritage and the theme.

A special congratulations to our speakers this year, Sione Mateaki (Year 7) and Jones Cocker (Year 13), who spoke with great pride about the importance of their culture. It was inspiring to see them represent their heritage with such passion.

A special thank you to the students who led the chapel service celebrating the Tongan language. Brothers Carlos Malakai (Year 10) and Orlando Malakai (Year 12) spoke about what their culture means to them. Justin Ohuafi (Year 9) demonstrated his Tongan oratory skills by reading the Gospel passage in Tongan, followed by Ceazah-Blue Tukuafu-Taufa (Year 10), who read the English version. The chapel service concluded with Brian Tausilia (Year 10) and Toni Katoa (Year 11) reading the prayers of the faithful in Tongan. It was wonderful to see our students express their culture through our Catholic traditions.

On Friday, students wore their Tongan attire, showcasing their pride in who they are and where they come from. It was heartening to see these young men maintain such a strong connection to their families' heritage.
