St Paul’s Students Set Sail on an Unforgettable Leadership Voyage

On Wednesday 18 March, twenty‑two students and two staff members stepped aboard Lion New Zealand for a three‑day sailing adventure that pushed them beyond their comfort zones and into a world of teamwork, resilience, and brotherhood.

Life at sea was a dramatic shift from the familiar routines of school. Space was limited, tasks were shared, and every student quickly learned the importance of communication and cooperation. Despite the challenges, St Paul’s College students adapted impressively, embracing each new responsibility with maturity and enthusiasm.

Each day brought fresh opportunities for growth. The boys took part in a wide range of activities including kayaking, cooking, early‑morning swims, and hands‑on nautical training. Of course, the heart of the experience was sailing itself—working together to navigate one of New Zealand’s most iconic vessels. With every hoisted sail and every coordinated manoeuvre, their confidence and leadership skills strengthened.

Perhaps the most powerful outcome of the voyage was the deepening sense of brotherhood. Living and working in close quarters encouraged the boys to support one another, celebrate each other’s strengths, and step up when challenges arose. By the end of the trip, the group returned not just with new skills, but with stronger bonds and a renewed sense of pride in themselves and their school.

We are incredibly grateful for the support that made this voyage possible. Opportunities like this shape young men in lasting ways, and we encourage future students to take up the challenge and experience the adventure of sailing for themselves.
